Hydroponic Farm sustainable strawberry cultivation

Hydroponic Farm sustainable strawberry cultivation

By Jamie Martin

A groundbreaking USDA Urban Agriculture Project is combining hydroponics with organic practices to grow strawberries sustainably. Led by Dr. Xin Zhao at UF/IFAS, this research explores various cultivars in hydroponic tabletop systems using recycled media under high tunnels.

The project’s focus is on efficient water and nutrient use while addressing challenges like plastic reliance and nutrient compatibility with organic standards. Hydroponic systems allow farmers to grow food closer to consumers, ensuring freshness and flavour, while organic practices promote biodiversity and sustainability.

To engage the community, the Hydroponic Organic Tabletop Strawberry Research Field Day will take place on February 13, 2025, in Citra, FL, followed by an On-Farm Workshop on February 20, 2025, in Orlando, FL. These events highlight innovative strawberry farming techniques, nutrient delivery methods, and real-world farmer feedback.

“Ultimately, there is a valuable place in the food system for all forms of food production to feed almost 10 billion people of varying cultures, regions, and socio-economic status.”

Attendees will learn about resource-efficient urban farming strategies and explore solutions for sustainable agriculture. This project emphasizes collaboration between researchers, farmers, and students to create a resilient food system.
