Governor Shapiro highlights agriculture role in Pennsylvania

Governor Josh Shapiro and Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding recently visited the 109th Pennsylvania Farm Show, highlighting the Shapiro Administration’s dedication to strengthening the state’s agricultural sector.

Agriculture plays a crucial role in Pennsylvania’s economy, with over 53,000 farms providing 600,000 jobs and contributing $132 billion annually.

During Public Officials Day, Governor Shapiro outlined key accomplishments from his first two years in office, emphasizing initiatives to maintain Pennsylvania’s leadership in agriculture.

These include sustainable farming, technology adoption, farmland preservation, avian influenza mitigation, and support for organic farming.

“In my Administration, we know that economic growth and opportunity flow right through our farmlands and it’s a way of life we are working to protect for countless Pennsylvanians,” Governor Shapiro stated.

“That’s why agriculture is at the heart of our economic development strategy, and a key focus of the bipartisan budgets I’ve signed as Governor. From supporting our farmers to expanding access to fresh, local food, we are committed to strengthening this vital industry and preserving it for generations to come.”

Governor Shapiro’s Economic Development Strategy places agriculture at the forefront, ensuring Pennsylvania remains a national leader.

The $10 million Agriculture Innovation Grant Program, the first of its kind, enables agricultural businesses to adopt new technologies and renewable energy solutions.

The Shapiro Administration has also invested in several agricultural projects, such as $3 million for Folkland Foods to expand organic potato farming in Erie County, $1.5 million for Little Leaf Farms’ CEA campus in Carbon County, and $4 million for ByHeart’s baby formula production facility expansion in Berks County.

Additional investments have supported farmland preservation and avian influenza mitigation.

Secretary Redding noted, “As our farmers face increasing demands to feed a growing population while continuing their legacy of environmental stewardship, Governor Shapiro’s leadership and investments will ensure that Pennsylvania’s agricultural businesses remain strong and innovative.”

With the 2025 PA Farm Show running through January 11, Governor Shapiro continues to focus on innovation and sustainability, ensuring Pennsylvania’s agricultural industry remains robust and competitive.
