Bee enthusiasts can embark on a global journey of beekeeping knowledge through a free six-week webinar series offered by Penn State Extension.
"Beekeeping Around the World" is designed for both experienced beekeepers and those with a general interest in bees and global agriculture.
The series will feature weekly webinars from noon to 1 p.m. Thursdays, starting February 6th and concluding March 13th. Each session will delve into the unique beekeeping practices of a different country, offering valuable insights into diverse beekeeping traditions and challenges.
The webinar schedule includes:
- France: Explore beekeeping in Brittany, including nectar sources, honey production, pest management, and honey marketing.
- Yukon Territory: Learn about managing bees in a challenging northern climate, focusing on strategies for honey harvests, colony growth, and winter survival.
- Kenya: Discover how beekeeping initiatives are used to deter elephants from raiding crops, promoting human-wildlife coexistence and conservation efforts.
- Turkey: Explore Turkey's rich beekeeping history, its renowned honey varieties (like pine and chestnut), and the potential for future growth and innovation in the Turkish beekeeping industry.
- India: Learn about native Indian honeybee species and the common challenges and practices faced by beekeepers in the country.
- Brazil: Delve into the fascinating world of stingless bees, crucial pollinators in tropical and subtropical regions. The session will cover the diversity of stingless bees, beekeeping practices, and sustainable management.
For those unable to attend live, on-demand recordings from last year's series, covering countries like Sweden, the Himalayas, Mexico, Lesotho, Thailand, and Ukraine, are available for free on the Penn State Extension website.
To participate in the live webinars, registration is required by 11:59 a.m. on the day of each session. Registered participants will receive a link to the live webinar and a recording link within 10 business days, accessible for six months.
