Garden enthusiasts of all ages and experience levels are encouraged to join the upcoming Garden Grow-How event hosted by the Dr. Keiko Miwa Ross Student Farm. Scheduled for Monday, March 25th, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Heritage Hall, this event promises to offer valuable gardening skills and hands-on experience for participants.
Organized in collaboration with various campus and community groups such as the Penn State Community Garden, the Arboretum at Penn State, Zoils and Pigments, and the Student Farm Club, the event aims to engage the community in learning about food systems.
Led by Anton Fatula, an AmeriCorps member working with the Ross Student Farm, the event will feature a range of activities suitable for everyone. Whether attendees are seasoned gardeners or new to the concept of gardening, there will be something valuable to take away. Participants can expect to receive seeds and expert advice to kickstart their gardening journey.
The event will cater to individuals living in small spaces like dorm rooms or apartments, offering creative gardening ideas tailored to limited spaces. Family-friendly stations will provide engaging activities for children, including composting demonstrations, botanical crafts, seed swapping, and more.
Isabella Petitta, vice president of the Penn State Community Garden, mentioned that their station will focus on indoor seed-starting methods, empowering gardeners to grow their own plants in preparation for the upcoming gardening season.
Both campus members and the wider community are welcome to attend, with paid parking available on the HUB parking deck. Additionally, attendees can look forward to door prizes, including handmade clay pots and free succulents for Penn State students. Generous donations from Chelsea Green Publishing, Floret Farms, and the Dr. Keiko Miwa Ross Student Farm will provide prizes such as gardening books, supplies, and seedlings.
