WOAH webinar on wildlife and screwworm spread

WOAH webinar on wildlife and screwworm spread

By Jamie Martin

The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) regional office for the Americas is organizing a virtual webinar on August 19 to examine the growing wildlife risks posed by the reemergence of the new world screwworm. The session begins at 8 a.m. CDT and will be held in English and Spanish.

The new world screwworm has been detected again in several countries in the region, raising alarms for human health, animal health, and biodiversity. While previously viewed primarily as a livestock issue, its spread through wildlife presents new challenges. Some wild species can host or carry the pest, allowing it to move across regions and ecosystems.

To tackle this, experts recommend a coordinated “One Health” approach that brings together animal health services, environmental protection agencies, and conservation sectors. This method emphasizes the interconnectedness of humans, animals, and the environment in disease prevention and control.

The webinar’s objectives include:

  • Informing participants about the screwworm’s current status in the Americas.
  • Explaining the role of wildlife in its spread.
  • Providing wildlife agencies with tools to prepare for, detect, and respond to cases early.

The event will gather regional experts to share real-world case studies, lessons learned, and practical control measures. It is open to the general public, particularly those in veterinary services, wildlife health organizations, NGOs, the private sector, and educational institutions.

By joining, participants will gain valuable knowledge and practical strategies to help safeguard both domestic animals and wildlife from this destructive pest.
