The Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation launched Ag Literacy Week with a special event at Wellsville Elementary School. Vice Chairman Tommy Nagle and Gifford-Pinchot FFA students read "Anywhere Farm" and helped students with gardening activities. The York County Agricultural Society donated books for every classroom in the district. FFA students also brought a petting zoo and farm equipment to showcase agriculture to the younger generation.
Ag Literacy Week, running from March 18th to 22nd, will see volunteers visit schools across Pennsylvania to read the chosen book and discuss local farming. Nearly 2,000 books will be donated to classrooms. The program connects agricultural volunteers with students, fostering a dialogue about agriculture. Volunteers will share their stories and experiences, along with donating books and educational materials for continued learning.
"It's crucial to connect with these children," said Nagle. "We want them to understand what farming is about and the role farmers play. Ag Literacy Week provides a valuable opportunity for them to learn and ask questions about the future of agriculture in Pennsylvania.
This year's book, "Anywhere Farm," encourages children to explore the concept of urban agriculture. The book highlights how even small spaces like balconies or windowsills can be transformed into mini farms. The message is that anyone can contribute to agriculture, regardless of location.
