A new initiative focused on advancing agricultural technologies and natural resource management will take center stage at Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences Exhibits Building during the 2025 Ag Progress Days, set for August 12-14.
One of the highlights will be the college’s recently introduced Technology for Agriculture and Living Systems initiative. This program aims to unite researchers and extension experts from various fields to develop practical, innovative solutions that improve food production, conserve Pennsylvania’s natural landscapes, and foster healthier, more resilient communities.
“The college has a long history of showcasing our agricultural industries and the science, technology and educational programs that help drive innovation and stimulate economic development in the commonwealth,” said Troy Ott, dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences.
“We’re excited to show visitors how our scientists are using artificial intelligence, robotics and other emerging and advanced technologies in the effort to enhance food and fiber production, biodiversity, natural resources, and human health and well-being.”
Exhibits will feature cutting-edge work in biotechnology for crop breeding, robotics in tree-fruit production, and precision “fertigation”-applying fertilizer with irrigation. Advanced sensors and monitoring tools used in conservation efforts also will be showcased.
Visitors can also explore several other key topics:
- Protecting Animal Health: Experts will share insights into animal disease research, including avian influenza, and discuss careers in veterinary and animal sciences.
- Invasive Species Awareness: Learn about pests like the spotted lanternfly and management practices to protect crops and native species.
- Agricultural Education and Careers: Prospective students and families can connect with staff to explore academic offerings and career paths in plant, animal, environmental, and social sciences.
In addition to exhibits, the building’s theater will host daily presentations covering topics such as dairy sustainability, biogas strategy, wild bees, and invasive species updates.
Ag Progress Days will be held at the Russell E. Larson Agricultural Research Center at Rock Springs, nine miles southwest of State College on Route 45. Event hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on August 12, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on August 13, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on August 14. Admission and parking are free.
