According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service in Pennsylvania, the week ending August 18, 2024, saw 5.0 days suitable for fieldwork.
Topsoil moisture levels were reported as 3% very short, 18% short, 66% adequate, and 13% surplus. Subsoil moisture was at 4% very short, 24% short, 69% adequate, and 3% surplus.
Crop progress for the week of August 18, 2024, is as follows:
- Apples: 10% harvested, up from 6% last week. Data for last year is not available, with a 5-year average of 17%.
- Corn: 84% silking, 41% in dough stage, 9% dented, and an average height of 78 inches.
- Hay, Alfalfa: 44% in the third cutting and 22% in the fourth cutting.
- Hay, Other: 72% in the second cutting and 23% in the third cutting.
- Oats: 57% harvested for grain.
- Peaches: 61% harvested, a significant increase from 47% last week.
- Soybeans: 90% blooming and 62% setting pods.
These figures reflect varying conditions and progress across different crops, with moisture levels generally adequate for growth and development.
