Chainsaws are powerful tools that can be dangerous if not used correctly. With the potential to cause serious injuries, proper training is essential for anyone operating a chainsaw, especially municipal workers who may use them during storm cleanup and other tasks.
In the summer of 2024, a chainsaw safety training session was held in Kingston, Pennsylvania, for public works employees from six local communities.
The training, led by Natural Resource Extension Educator Mike Powell and Extension Urban Forester Vincent Cotrone, provided hands-on experience in a park setting.
Participants learned essential safety practices, including the importance of personal protective equipment like hard hats, eye protection, ear protection, and chainsaw chaps. Proper starting techniques, safe handling, and the use of the brake were also emphasized.
Additionally, the training covered various cutting techniques, such as plunge cuts, back cuts, and notching, to minimize the risk of kickback and ensure safe tree removal.
Penn State Extension is committed to promoting chainsaw safety and is planning to offer similar training sessions in other parts of Pennsylvania in 2025.
Municipalities interested in hosting a training session should contact Vincent Cotrone to discuss the logistics and requirements.
By providing comprehensive chainsaw safety training, Penn State Extension aims to reduce the risk of accidents and injuries associated with chainsaw use, ensuring the safety of municipal workers and promoting responsible equipment operation.
