Local grain fuels hog boom - $47M mill boosts PA farms

Local grain fuels hog boom - $47M mill boosts PA farms

By Blake Jackson

Get ready for some serious swine satisfaction! Construction is roaring on a massive new hog feed mill in Pennsylvania, promising a revolution for local production and efficiency. Country View Family Farms, a Middletown-based hog powerhouse, is building this $47 million beast in White Deer Township.

At its peak, this behemoth will churn out a whopping 8,000 tons of feed per week, enough to keep 60% of Country View's contracted hog producers happy and well-fed. That's at least 120 farms, most within a 50-mile radius of the mill – talk about convenient deliveries!

But this isn't just a feed factory, it's a foodie paradise for pigs. Think 600,000 bushels of corn and soybean storage, ensuring a steady flow of deliciousness. And best of all, hungry porkers can munch on antibiotic-free options if their diet demands it.

And the benefits spread beyond bacon bliss. This project is a jobs bonanza, employing 50 locals as mill operators and truck drivers. Plus, the company vows to buy grain from nearby farms whenever possible, giving the local agricultural community a big boost.

So, what does this all mean for Union County? Well, besides a possible increase in happy pig snorts, the mill itself is quite the sight. Its 176-foot tower and four 150-foot silos will become a new landmark, a testament to local ingenuity and porky prosperity.

This project isn't just about building a mill, it's about building a more efficient, sustainable food system that benefits farmers, pigs, and the community as a whole. So, next time you bite into a juicy burger, remember, it might just have started its journey in the heart of Pennsylvania hog heaven.
