Seiple Farms, located in East Allen Township, Northampton County, is facing challenges due to the ongoing dry weather, which has prompted the temporary closure of the farm. As berry picking season is in full swing, the lack of rain has raised concerns among local farmers.
Andrea Delong, the General Manager at Seiple Farms, expressed her worries about the prolonged absence of rain, stating, "It hasn't rained in over a month, which isn't good." The arid conditions have made the farm's soil dry and dusty, making it difficult to operate.
On Tuesday, Seiple Farms made the tough decision to close its doors for the day, as there were no ripe berries available for picking. Instead, the farm focused on irrigating the fields to help the next batch of berries ripen. Delong emphasized the urgency, explaining that strawberry season lasts only 2-3 weeks.
Seiple Farms is not the only farm experiencing these difficulties, as other local farmers in the Lehigh Valley are also hoping for much-needed rainfall. The dry weather has not only impacted berry crops but has also affected other crops such as corn, soybeans, and peas.
Fortunately, Seiple Farms plans to reopen on Wednesday, as there are now plenty of red strawberries available for picking. Despite the challenges, the farm has maintained last year's prices, hoping to retain its loyal customers during these dry times.
Visitors planning to go to Seiple Farms are advised to check the farm's social media channels in the morning for any updates or changes. Farmers throughout the area are eagerly awaiting rain to salvage the remaining berry season and ensure the success of upcoming crop-based attractions, including the highly anticipated sunflower festival.
