Corn crop concerns - mycotoxins and weather impacts

Corn crop concerns - mycotoxins and weather impacts

By Blake Jackson

Mycotoxin levels in Pennsylvania's wheat harvest varied regionally, but overall impact matched previous years according to Paul Esker, a Penn State field crop pathologist.

"This year might be slightly above average, but not as severe as 2018's wet conditions," Esker said. "The key factor is the timing of wheat flowering and the weather leading up to it."

Yields were positive, with many reports in the 50-60 bushel per acre range. Penn State's Rock Springs Research Farm even achieved yields exceeding 100 bushels per acre. Esker attributed this success to proper fertilizer timing and favorable winter weather. However, some areas experienced issues from a wet winter.

"We had rain instead of snow," Esker explained, "up to 10 inches between January and March in some areas. This caused ponding and reduced stand quality. Pennsylvania's diverse topography makes achieving a perfect wheat season across the state challenging."

With wheat harvest complete, the focus shifts to corn and potential mycotoxin concerns. Esker highlighted uneven growth stages within fields and hot weather impacting pollination as key worries.

"Last year's erratic weather patterns led to high ear rot rates in some areas," Esker said. "The forecast predicting above-average August precipitation for parts of the state adds to the concern."

"Areas experiencing heat and dryness followed by high humidity during ear development could be susceptible to disease outbreaks," he continued. "Farmers should be vigilant in the coming weeks, paying close attention to pollination quality and husk appearance."

While the wheat harvest brought mixed results, Pennsylvania corn farmers now face potential mycotoxin challenges due to uneven growth and weather uncertainties.
