New food hub to address food insecurity
Pennsylvania Ag Connection - 11/17/2023

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is opening a new food hub in Hollidaysburg in an effort to address rising food insecurity in the region. The food hub will serve Blair, Huntingdon, Centre, Clearfield, Bedford, and Fulton counties.

"We're at record high levels of demand right now," said Joe Arthur, CEO of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. "We're not distributing as much food per person in the Allegheny Mountain region as we believe is necessary to truly serve the region."

The food bank's main hub is in Harrisburg, and there is a smaller one in Williamsport. The new food hub in Hollidaysburg will be closer to the communities it serves, which will allow the food bank to distribute more food to people in need.

Arthur said the food bank is also hoping to partner with local farmers to provide fresh produce and other healthy food for the hub.

"The farm opportunities are large," Arthur said. "We're excited about the opportunities in that region, which we haven't tapped today."

The renovations to the building that will house the new food hub are expected to take a few more months. The hub should be ready for expanded operations by March or April 2024.
