USDA Secures $280M for Drought-Impacted Texas Farmers

USDA Secures $280M for Drought-Impacted Texas Farmers

By Jamie Martin

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins unveiled a $280 million grant to assist Rio Grande Valley farmers in Texas, who are facing economic challenges due to Mexico’s failure to meet the 1944 Water Treaty obligations.

During the announcement in McAllen, Texas, with prominent figures like U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, the emphasis was on the urgent need for this aid to support the local agriculture sector, which has historically bolstered the U.S. food supply.

"The Texas agriculture community helps feed, clothe, and fuel our entire country, and it is critical that they have the help and resources they need to keep their industry thriving," highlighted Senator Cornyn during the event.

The grant aims to mitigate the economic impact on farmers who have faced crop failures and financial instability as Mexico has fallen short of its obligation to deliver 350,000 acre-feet of water annually. This shortfall has led to crop devastation and job losses, threatening the local economy and food production capabilities.

"I was proud to lead the effort in the U.S. Senate to secure this $280 million block grant, which is critical for Texas producers in the Rio Grande Valley, and to work with Secretary Rollins and President Trump in getting it across the finish line," Senator Cruz expressed, underscoring the collaborative effort to secure these essential funds.

The Texas Department of Agriculture will oversee the implementation and distribution of the grant funds, focusing on producers with verified losses in the specified calendar years.

This initiative represents an important step in supporting the agricultural community during an ongoing crisis, ensuring that the backbone of the South Texas economy remains robust despite environmental and diplomatic challenges.
