Swine surveys - shaping a brighter industry future

Swine surveys - shaping a brighter industry future

By Blake Jackson

Two crucial surveys are underway, offering pig farmers across the nation an opportunity to contribute to the swine industry's advancement. These initiatives aim to identify knowledge gaps and enhance educational resources for producers of all sizes.

Investigating the Nutritional Impact on Reproduction:

Researchers at Pennsylvania State University are conducting a study to explore the potential influence of a sow's nutritional status on her reproductive performance. The hypothesis centers on potential deficiencies in vitamins and minerals hindering reproductive health.

To gain a broader perspective, they are inviting all Pennsylvania pig farmers to participate in an anonymous survey. The collected data will be used to pinpoint critical nutritional areas impacting reproductive outcomes. Additionally, farmers can volunteer for further analysis to determine the nutritional status of their sow herd.

Supporting Independent and Small-Scale Operations:

Recognizing the challenges faced by independent and small pig farms, along with their veterinarians, in accessing essential resources, the National Pork Board has launched a multi-state survey. This initiative seeks to gain a deeper understanding of the specific needs and educational gaps experienced by these producers and their veterinary support.

The survey encompasses various facets of swine production, including animal welfare practices, disease management strategies, production efficiency, sustainability efforts, nutritional choices, and biosecurity measures. Preliminary findings emphasize the need for improved access to veterinary resources, with both producers and veterinarians acknowledging a gap in this area.

A Collaborative Approach for Industry Advancement:

These surveys extend beyond mere data collection. They represent a collaborative effort to foster a continuously evolving and successful swine industry. By gaining a comprehensive understanding of the diverse needs across all production scales, extension agents can develop more targeted and relevant educational resources.

The ultimate objective is to cultivate a more informed and sustainable industry that values the contribution of every pig farm, regardless of size.

Call to Action:

  • Pennsylvania Pig Farmers: Participate in the Penn State survey on sow nutrition and reproduction by August 1st for a chance to win a $100 gift card (as a token of appreciation).
  • Small and Independent Pig Farmers (Nationwide): Contribute to the National Pork Board survey to help tailor future educational resources to your specific needs.
  • Veterinarians with Swine Clients: Share your insights in the National Pork Board survey to help improve veterinary support for small-scale producers.

Through active participation, pig farmers and veterinarians can play a vital role in shaping a thriving and successful future for the swine industry.
