The Pennsylvania Senate sent a bill to Governor Josh Shapiro on Wednesday that would rename the Milk Marketing Board to the Pennsylvania Milk Board. The House approved the bill by a similar margin in June.
The board's name has been disputed for years because it does not facilitate the sale and distribution of milk. Rather, it sets prices and regulates milk sellers.
Other names have been suggested, such as the Milk Control Board and Milk Regulation Board, but the bill by Representative Christina Sappey, D-Chester, went with an even simpler name.
Pennsylvania is the nation's eighth largest dairy producer, and few other states have an agency comparable to the Milk Marketing Board.
The Senate in June also voted to change the name of the Department of Environmental Protection to the Department of Environmental Services. Senator Gene Yaw, R-Lycoming, said the name change would help shift the department's image from an intimidating enforcer to a partner of individuals and businesses.
Senate Democrats opposed the plan, and it remains in committee in the Democratic-controlled House.
