Pennsylvania Farmers Thrive with New Grants

By Blake Jackson

In the heart of Pennsylvania, a new wave of agricultural prosperity is taking root, thanks to a unique approach to farm funding. Spearheading this movement is Ben Rust, a city dweller turned farmer, who represents the new face of sustainable agriculture.

Rust, owner of MudPond Meats in Dalton, is a recent beneficiary of over $77,500 from the PA Department of Agriculture's Very Small Meat and Poultry Processor Grant. This grant is a key part of Pennsylvania's own Farm Bill, a pioneering initiative that distinguishes the state from its counterparts.

Rust's journey back to his farming roots in 2012 was driven by a desire to offer his family the wholesome lifestyle he cherished. His venture into meat processing five years ago, coupled with the recent grant, has allowed Rust to avoid seeking employment off the farm, ensuring he remains close to home and his growing children.

The grant has proven to be more than just financial aid; it has provided Rust access to business consultants and opportunities to enhance MudPond's infrastructure. With this support, Rust has diversified his operations and embraced a broader market, including interstate shipments and direct retail sales.

The USDA certification, made possible through the grant, has been a game-changer, enabling him to forge relationships with restaurants and grocery stores, and to expand his market reach beyond state lines.

Secretary Russell Redding of the PA Department of Agriculture emphasizes the comprehensive nature of these grants, which cover equipment, facilities, training, and certification. This flexibility is crucial for farmers like Rust, who seek to adapt and grow in a dynamic market.

This year, 12 grants were awarded to businesses across 11 counties, as part of the PA Farm Bill. Since its inception in 2019, the state's Farm Bill, in conjunction with USDA, has invested over $2.5 million in local developments through the Very Small Meat and Poultry Processor Grants, affecting 25 counties.

This commitment to local agriculture not only strengthens individual businesses but also enhances the overall vitality of Pennsylvania's farming community.
