As of November 3, 2024, Pennsylvania reported 7.0 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture levels indicate challenges, with 10% classified as very short, 33% short, 57% adequate, and no surplus.
Subsoil moisture is slightly better, with 9% very short, 27% short, and 64% adequate, reflecting the ongoing moisture concerns for farmers in the region.
In terms of crop progress, notable advancements have been made. Barley planting has reached 85%, a significant increase from 70% the previous week, while 50% of the barley has emerged, compared to 35% last week.
Corn is nearly mature at 95%, showing strong progress despite being slightly lower than the 98% recorded last year. The corn harvested for grain stands at 60%, up from 50% the previous week and significantly surpassing last year's 43%.
Soybean harvesting has also accelerated, with 61% completed, compared to 45% last week, although it is below the 68% five-year average.
Furthermore, winter wheat planting is progressing well at 83%, and 45% of the crop has emerged, indicating a productive season overall for Pennsylvania's agriculture.
