PA farms get $450K research boost

PA farms get $450K research boost

By Blake Jackson

Pennsylvania's thriving agriculture industry is getting a boost! Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding announced a call for proposals for $450,000 in research grants through the Center for Poultry & Livestock Excellence. This investment, part of Governor Josh Shapiro's commitment to a robust agricultural future, aims to tackle critical challenges and fuel innovation.

"These grants will be weapons in our arsenal against costly threats like avian influenza," Redding emphasized. "By investing in research, we protect our food supply, our farmers, and the $132.5 billion powerhouse that is Pennsylvania agriculture."

Since 2019, the Center has been a champion for animal agriculture, playing a crucial role in managing the recent avian influenza outbreak. Now, it's inviting proposals focused on poultry, swine, sheep, and goats, with a focus on four key areas:

  • Biosecurity and Disease Preparedness: Boosting defenses against threats like avian influenza and ensuring swift response capabilities.
  • Infrastructure and Workforce Development: Building a stronger foundation for animal agriculture, including upskilling the workforce and exploring telemedicine in veterinary care.
  • Food Security: Strengthening Pennsylvania's supply chain and minimizing risks to ensure a stable food system.
  • Emerging Diseases and Sustainability: Addressing novel threats, exploring regenerative farming practices, and leveraging precision farming technologies.

Got a brilliant research idea? Proposals can be submitted online until March 21, 2024. Head over to the Center's website for complete guidelines, ongoing projects, success stories, and more!
