Best Methods to Reduce Mites on Garlic Cloves Post-Harvest

By Blake Jackson

Garlic cloves may develop a frosty, sparkling appearance after harvest, resembling ice crystals. This is often caused by Eriophyid mites, a diverse group of tiny pests that can infest various plants. While the impact of these mites on garlic is not fully understood, they can reduce bulb quality and shelf life.

The presence of Eriophyid mites in garlic may be linked to drier conditions. Observations suggest that during dry periods, mites seek out moist environments, such as the inside of garlic bulbs. Conversely, wetter conditions might suppress mite populations.

Avoiding mite infestations during the growing season is crucial. Research on post-harvest cleaning methods is limited, but some preliminary findings suggest potential solutions.

A small-scale study by Dr. Frank Hay showed that a 1% solution of Potassium Salts of Fatty Acids effectively reduced mite populations on 80% of treated cloves. However, egg viability was not assessed.

Soaking cloves in a 20% bleach solution for 20 minutes has been shown to reduce bloat nematodes in garlic without harming the cloves (Roberts and Matthews 1995).

The effectiveness of this method against Eriophyid mites is unknown, and higher bleach concentrations can reduce seed viability.
