4-H youth shine at National Avian Bowl

4-H youth shine at National Avian Bowl

By Blake Jackson

A team of 4-H members from Pennsylvania recently secured second place in the avian bowl at the National 4-H Poultry and Egg Conference, held at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky. The team included Adelaide Miller and Emily Bechdel from Clinton County.

The conference offers a platform for youth to engage in various activities and contests, designed to introduce them to the poultry industry. The avian bowl competition tests participants' knowledge of different poultry species, food safety, nutrition, physiology, eggs, and related subjects.

"Participating in animal science knowledge contests teaches youth about their 4-H animal science projects and increases their knowledge level about those projects," said Kirsten Dubbs, Penn State Extension 4-H animal science specialist. "In addition, these contests provide opportunities to learn and practice a host of other life skills, such as decision-making, teamwork, evaluating on the fly, memorization, and recall."

Support for the 4-H teams participating in these contests is provided by the Pennsylvania Livestock Association and an industry-sponsored poultry endowment at Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences. These funds help cover travel and other costs for the national poultry contest participants.

4-H, a youth development program administered by Penn State Extension, equips young people with valuable knowledge and skills to become responsible and caring citizens. The program is supported by the United States Department of Agriculture and offers various programs to help youth thrive.
