Pennsylvania Corn and Soybean Production Down

Pennsylvania corn production for grain is forecast at 153 million bushels, down 6% from 2019, according to King Whetstone, director of the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), Northeastern Regional Field Office. Based on conditions as of September 1, yields are expected to average 153.0 bushels per harvested acre, unchanged from the previous year. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 1.00 million acres, down 6% from the previous year.

Soybean production for beans is forecast at 29.6 million bushels, down 1% from 2019. Based on conditions as of September 1, yields are expected to average a record high 49.0 bushels per harvested acre, the same as the previous year. Area harvested for beans in Pennsylvania is forecast at 605 thousand acres, down 1% from 2019.

The 2020 Pennsylvania tobacco production is forecast at 11.5 million pounds, down 19% from 2019. Area harvested, at 4,800 acres, is 16% below last year. Yield for the 2020 crop year is forecast at 2,400 pounds per acre, 77 pounds above last year. If realized, this will be the lowest tobacco production since 2005.

The forecasts in this report are based on conditions as of September 1. Any potential impacts from severe weather that occurred after September 1 will be reflected in future reports.
