PA Dairy Month Highlights Farm Success

By Blake Jackson

As National Dairy Month begins, Pennsylvania lawmakers and dairy leaders gathered in Harrisburg to celebrate the vital role of dairy farming across the state. The event, hosted by Sen. Elder Vogel Jr. (R-47), highlighted the contributions of nearly 5,000 dairy farms that support 47,000 jobs and generate more than $11 billion annually in economic revenue.

Senator Vogel praised dairy farmers from all 67 counties, noting their hard work and dedication. “Our dairy farmers are the cornerstone of our nation, working every day to ensure Pennsylvania families enjoy fresh dairy products,” Vogel said.

Deputy Secretary Lisa Graybeal of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and Jayne Sebright from the Center for Dairy Excellence shared how the industry benefits communities and the economy. Graybeal emphasized the Shapiro Administration’s support for innovation and sustainability in the sector.

The top five dairy-producing counties—Lancaster, Franklin, Lebanon, Berks, and Blair—contribute $4.9 billion of the total dairy revenue. Senator Scott Martin (R-13) and Senator Judy Schwank (D-11) spoke about their counties’ involvement in the dairy industry. Martin highlighted the industry's economic importance, while Schwank praised local farmers for adopting new technologies and preserving cultural traditions.

Berks County, in particular, stands out for its range of dairy operations—from traditional farms to artisan cheese producers. The celebration also included the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau President, county dairy princesses, and the State Dairy Princess Royalty Team.

Dairy Month serves as a time to honor the industry’s heritage and ongoing contributions. Pennsylvania’s dairy farmers remain committed to producing high-quality, nutritious products for families across the state and nation.
