In response to the growing demand for skilled workers in cannabis production and agribusiness, the Department of Plant Science, Landscape Architecture, and Environmental Science offers a Horticulture major with a specialization in Cannabis. This program provides students with the option to pursue a four-year degree or a 17-credit, one-year certificate in Cannabis Studies.
Delaware Valley University’s cannabis program distinguishes itself by combining a strong science-based theoretical foundation with hands-on learning opportunities. Students engage with cutting-edge technologies and participate in laboratory exercises that offer real-world experience in cannabis production. The program is designed to integrate with degree studies, and current students are encouraged to consult with academic advisors to tailor the program to their academic and career goals. Additionally, part-time students can enroll in the Cannabis Studies certificate program on its own.
The Cannabis Research Program at DelVal, led by Dr. Carla Garzon, focuses on various aspects of hemp production, processing, and product manufacturing. One research area involves plant pathology, where researchers are working on identifying and managing emerging diseases in hemp crops in Pennsylvania. Collaborative efforts with universities like Cornell and Penn State are advancing the understanding of fungal pathogens and resistance patterns in hemp crops.
Another key research area is crop breeding, with two ongoing projects. One project, in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin and USDA-ARS, aims to create new hemp varieties resistant to pests and diseases. The other project focuses on developing hemp varieties with low levels of cannabinoids that can be used for educational purposes.
DelVal also emphasizes hemp product development, with efforts to standardize protocols for processing hemp grain, fiber, and flower into raw materials and finished products. This research is integrated into the curriculum, providing students with valuable skills in hemp-based manufacturing.
