Best Practices for Sustainable Solar Farm Development

As grid-scale solar development expands across the landscape, communities may have questions about its potential effects on people, agriculture, wildlife, water resources, and the surrounding environment.

Careful planning, site selection, environmental assessments, and responsible operating practices can help reduce these concerns.

Solar developers generally seek locations that avoid wetlands, floodplains, unstable or corrosive soils, high-risk areas, airports, railroad easements, and environmentally sensitive sites. Where possible, development should minimize the use of prime farmland. Agrivoltaic systems, which combine solar generation with agricultural activities, can provide an alternative approach.

Before construction, developers should evaluate potential risks involving hazardous materials, wildlife habitat, threatened and endangered species, wetlands, waterways, cultural resources, visual impacts, and noise. These assessments can help identify sensitive areas and guide project design.

Stormwater management is another important consideration. Construction can increase erosion and runoff if soil is disturbed improperly.

Effective measures may include vegetation preservation, drainage controls, retention features, erosion prevention, and maintaining adequate plant cover beneath and around panels. Projects should also comply with applicable federal, state, and local stormwater requirements.

Modern solar panels are generally constructed with materials such as tempered glass, plastics, silicon, aluminum, copper, and small quantities of other metals. These materials are enclosed within protective layers, reducing environmental exposure. Testing and responsible recycling or disposal programs can further address concerns about damaged or retired panels.

Solar facilities also produce non-ionizing electromagnetic fields, which decrease rapidly with distance. Proper placement of inverters, transformers, and energy storage equipment can further limit exposure near neighboring properties. Electrical safety measures, including secure fencing and warning signs, are essential.

Wildlife protection should remain part of project planning. Developers can avoid sensitive habitats, schedule construction outside important breeding periods, use native vegetation, and establish appropriate buffers around wetlands and waterways.

Consultation with wildlife agencies can help identify protected species and determine suitable mitigation measures.

Overall, responsible solar development depends on comprehensive environmental review, effective stormwater controls, wildlife protection, electrical safety, and long-term site management. These practices can support renewable energy growth while reducing potential impacts on communities, farmland, and natural resources.
