Corn Growers Use CSNT to Fine-Tune Nitrogen Rates

As corn growers evaluate the success of their nitrogen (N) management programs, the late-season cornstalk nitrate test (CSNT) offers a valuable way to measure whether crops received too little, adequate, or excessive nitrogen during the growing season.

According to Charles White, Associate Professor of Soil Fertility and Nutrient Management at Penn State Extension, the test can help producers assess fertilizer decisions and make more informed adjustments for future crops.

With fertilizer costs remaining high, many growers reduced nitrogen applications, improved manure management, or adopted tools such as the recalibrated pre-sidedress soil nitrate test and nutrient credits from cover crops and soil organic matter. The CSNT provides end-of-season feedback on how those strategies performed.

Traditionally, CSNT results in Pennsylvania have been interpreted as low when nitrate levels are below 700 ppm, optimal between 700 and 2,000 ppm, and excessive above 2,000 ppm.

Fields testing above 2,000 ppm generally indicate that nitrogen applications could have been reduced without affecting yields, improving both profitability and environmental stewardship.

Recent Penn State research analyzing nitrogen-rate trials conducted from 2020 through 2025 suggests a more refined interpretation. Preliminary findings indicate that the most profitable results occurred when CSNT values ranged from about 115 to 330 ppm nitrate-N, with the widely recognized 250 ppm threshold often separating nitrogen-deficient and nitrogen-sufficient fields.

Results below 250 ppm are more likely to be associated with yield and economic losses caused by nitrogen shortages, while results above 700 ppm may indicate greater risk of over-fertilization.

Researchers emphasize that low CSNT values do not always mean more fertilizer is needed. Improving nitrogen-use efficiency through better timing, manure incorporation, stabilizers, or enhanced fertilizer management may be a more effective solution.

To perform the test, growers should collect samples between the one-quarter milk line stage and three weeks after physiological maturity.

At least 10 representative stalk samples should be gathered, with an eight-inch section cut six inches above the soil surface. Samples should be stored in paper bags and submitted to a laboratory for analysis.

When combined with field observations, yield data, and weather conditions, the CSNT can help producers fine-tune nitrogen management, reduce unnecessary costs, and improve long-term crop productivity.
