Spraying smarter - 5 Tips to reduce drift and save money

By Jamie Martin

Spray drift not only wastes resources but can also harm the environment. Fortunately, several factors can be optimized to achieve precise and efficient spraying, according to agricultural equipment experts at Hardi. Here are 5 key practices to help you reduce drift and get the most out of your spraying applications:

Selecting the Right Nozzle -

The type of nozzle you use significantly impacts droplet size and drift potential. For the best drift reduction, choose nozzles designed for ultra-coarse spray. Consider specialized injector nozzles or low-drift nozzles that produce larger droplets less susceptible to wind.

Think Big with Nozzle Size -

Larger nozzles produce larger, coarser droplets, reducing the amount of fine droplets prone to drift. The higher flow rate allows for lower pressure and faster spraying when conditions permit.

Maintaining the Right Boom Height -

The higher the boom, the longer droplets stay airborne, increasing the risk of drift. Keep the boom as low as possible without sacrificing coverage. A general rule of thumb suggests a height of 40-60 cm for minimal drift and optimal coverage.

Pressure Control Saves the Day -

Minimize drift by using the lowest possible pressure that still ensures effective spray distribution. Opt for nozzles designed to operate at lower pressures, like those requiring 1 to 6 bar. This reduces the formation of fine droplets that can easily drift away.

Find the Right Speed -

Higher speeds can cause boom instability and increase spray vortex, lifting droplets and promoting drift. For standard nozzles, maintain a speed of around 2 m/s (7.2 km/h). Injector nozzles offer more flexibility, allowing for higher speeds with larger nozzles and lower pressures.

By implementing these practices, you can significantly reduce spray drift, improve targeting accuracy, protect the environment, and potentially save money on wasted product. Explore the variety of nozzle options available to find the perfect fit for your spraying needs.
