Join Rodale’s Organic Field Day in Pennsylvania 2025

By Blake Jackson

The Rodale Institute’s California Organic Center in Camarillo recently hosted a vibrant Field Day event, drawing together farmers, researchers, and advocates for a day focused on advancing organic agriculture.

Rodale Institute, a pioneer in regenerative organic farming since 1947, operates research centers nationwide, including its California hub. The organization’s mission is to enhance public and planetary health through cutting-edge organic farming research, education, and farmer training.

Located at 1014 W. Ventura Blvd. in Camarillo, the California Organic Center focuses on developing region-specific organic solutions for Southern California.

Key research areas include cover cropping, low-till vegetable systems, compost usage, and integrated pest management techniques aimed at building soil health and sustainable food systems.

A highlight of Rodale’s efforts is its collaboration with the Farmer Veteran Coalition (FVC) to support military Veterans pursuing careers in agriculture.

Through the USDA’s AgVets program, Rodale and FVC offer hands-on training, mentorship, and resources tailored for Veterans. Based in Waco, Texas, FVC connects Veterans to markets, grants, and the Homegrown By Heroes label.

The partnership helps Veterans build resilient farming operations that benefit both their families and communities.

At the Camarillo event, FVC members from California shared their farm journeys, reinforcing the strong partnership between Rodale and FVC.

The event featured educational stations and activities, including:

  • Rotating field presentations on high residue reduced tillage, cover crops vs. plastic mulch, and the Regenerate Ventura County Project.
  • Live equipment demonstrations showcasing organic techniques.
  • Networking opportunities over lunch, bringing together attendees for knowledge sharing.
  • The presentation of the Organic Stewardship Award to Dr. Liz Carlisle for her contributions to organic farming.
  • Afternoon tours at UC Hansen Agricultural Research and Extension Center, highlighting cover crops, new orchards, and compost tea trials.

If you missed the California Field Day, Rodale Institute’s Annual Organic Field Day will be held on Friday, July 18, 2025, at their headquarters in Kutztown, Pennsylvania.

This full-day event includes nearly 20 demonstration stations and wagon tours of the farm. Registration is $25. Visit Rodale Institute’s website for details.
