Shapiro puts PA agriculture at center stage

By Blake Jackson

In January 2023, Governor-elect Josh Shapiro expressed enthusiasm for Pennsylvania agriculture as a vital economic driver and a key to the state's future. Recently, at OraSure Technologies in Bethlehem, Governor Shapiro unveiled a comprehensive economic strategy for the next decade, with agriculture positioned as a cornerstone.

The economic plan outlines clear goals, measurable metrics, and forward-thinking initiatives to guide Pennsylvania's economic growth over the next 10 years. Agriculture, one of the plan's five priority sectors alongside life sciences, robotics and technology, manufacturing, and energy, is recognized as integral to achieving these goals and offering abundant opportunities across the state.

The interconnected nature of these priority sectors means that strengthening one, such as manufacturing, positively impacts the supply chain for others. Agriculture, in particular, is poised to benefit from investments in technology, including precision agriculture, drone technology, AI-driven analytics, and sustainable farming methods. These advancements will optimize farming practices, enhance crop yields, and address environmental concerns.

Recognizing industry-wide labor challenges, the plan emphasizes the importance of pairing technological advancements with increased workforce development. Employee-centric, employer-powered workforce training and placement programs aim to support Pennsylvanians in navigating and excelling in the evolving labor market.

Efforts to streamline government processes for permits, grants, and project reviews are integral to the plan's success. Governor Shapiro's track record of reducing business certificate processing time from eight weeks to three days in his first year in office is cited as a model for expediting business operations in Pennsylvania.

The economic strategy acknowledges the complexities of the global, national, and local economy, positioning agriculture at the crossroads of historic prosperity and future vitality. As Pennsylvania faces an evolving economic landscape influenced by technological innovation, changing work dynamics, and shifts in commerce, collaboration among public, private, labor, nonprofit, and academic sectors is emphasized as crucial for sustained progress and competitiveness. Governor Shapiro's vision underscores the ambitious goals ahead and the need for a united approach to ensure Pennsylvania's economic growth and prosperity.
