Pennsylvania harvest status and crop conditions

Pennsylvania experienced favorable fieldwork conditions during the week ending September 1, 2024, with 6.0 days suitable for agricultural activities.

18% of the topsoil was short of moisture, 76% was adequately moist, and 6% had surplus moisture and 23% of the subsoil was short of moisture, 77% was adequately moist, and no areas had surplus moisture.

Crop Progress:

  • Apples: 30% of apples were harvested, slightly ahead of the 5-year average.
  • Corn: Corn development was progressing well, with 71% in the dough stage, 41% dented, and 13% harvested for silage. The average corn height reached 90 inches.
  • Fall Tillage: Fall tillage was 7% complete.
  • Hay: Alfalfa hay harvesting was in progress, with 70% of the third cutting and 30% of the fourth cutting completed. Other hay crops were also being harvested.
  • Oats: 85% of oats were harvested for grain.
  • Peaches: 80% of peaches were harvested.
  • Soybeans: Soybeans were progressing through their growth stages, with 84% setting pods and 8% dropping leaves.

Overall, Pennsylvania's crops are progressing well, with many crops exceeding or meeting their 5-year average development. However, it's important to continue monitoring crop conditions and weather patterns to ensure a successful harvest.
