The Pennsylvania Farm Bureau (PFB) is urging motorists to slow down and be patient when encountering farm equipment on rural roads this spring. Their message coincides with Rural Roads Safety Week, a campaign promoting awareness and reducing accidents involving farm vehicles.
"We're not out there to hold anyone up," says Scott Krug, a farmer at Bill Krug Family Farm. "We're planting crops, and if you see us, just give us a few minutes. We'll be out of your way soon."
The PFB stresses the importance of driver awareness and courtesy:
- Be aware of farm equipment on the road.
- Be patient and avoid getting frustrated by slower speeds.
- Yield to wide vehicles and provide ample space when passing.
- Only pass with caution, ensuring clear visibility in both directions.
- Don't assume farmers are aware of your presence behind them.
"Close calls are all too common," says Marty Yahner, President of the Cambria County Farm Bureau. "People pass us on blind curves and hills. Slowing down for just a few minutes can make all the difference."
Pennsylvania State Police will also be increasing patrols on rural roads during this time to enforce traffic safety laws and promote safe driving practices for everyone.
By sharing the road and practicing patience, both drivers and farmers can ensure a safe and productive planting season in Pennsylvania.
