The Department of Animal Science at Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences has selected Scott Kephart of Clearfield as the recipient of its 2025 Distinguished Poultry Science Alumnus Award.
Kephart has served since 2014 as senior farm supervisor at Penn State’s Poultry Education and Research Center (PERC), where he oversees daily operations, ensures compliance with research and animal care regulations, and manages a comprehensive safety program. The honor recognizes his significant achievements and long-standing contributions to poultry science.
“It’s an honor to be recognized by my peers and my alma mater for what I have accomplished,” Kephart said. “It’s a true high point in my life and career, and something I never thought I would receive.”
Lisa Holden, professor and interim head of the Department of Animal Science, highlighted the pride in presenting the award to a Penn State colleague. “Scott Kephart has had a notable career,” Holden said.
“We are privileged to have him as our very dedicated manager at the Penn State Poultry Education and Research Center (PERC) and we are thrilled to present him with the department distinguished alumni award for poultry science this year.”
Kephart earned his bachelor’s degree in poultry technology and management in 1990. As a student, Kephart lived and worked at the original Poultry Farm on Bigler Road. Reflecting on his return to Penn State, he said, “Then I came back in 2014 as the manager of the current facility located on Tower Road, where I give students the same great opportunity I had in college. Returning to Penn State was a great move in my career, and one I wish would have happened sooner.”
Kephart career before Penn State included leadership roles with Perdue Farms in both poultry and grain operations. Kephart developed innovative health programs, managed grain facilities, and even created a grain-bin rescue training initiative that later expanded to local fire departments.
Known for his positive leadership style, Kephart has earned recognition across the poultry and grain industries, while also contributing to organizations like the National Wild Turkey Federation, where he continues to serve in leadership and advisory roles.
