The Wayne Conservation District has been a trusted resource for Wayne County residents and farmers for more than seven decades. Established in 1955, the District held its first official Board of Directors meeting on March 10, 1956. Since then, it has continued working to protect the county’s natural resources through education, technical support, and conservation programs.
Over the years, the District has expanded its services to address a wide range of environmental and agricultural needs. Its areas of expertise include erosion and sediment control, forestry, watershed management, sustainable agriculture, no-till equipment rentals, cover crop programs, and dirt, gravel, and low-volume road management.
The District also organizes an annual seedling sale and Envirothon competition, provides wildlife education, and supports other natural resource initiatives throughout Wayne County. Partnerships with local organizations and agencies further strengthen these efforts.
The Board of Directors has played an important role in guiding the District throughout its history. Its members contribute valuable experience, knowledge, and leadership while maintaining strong communication with District staff. This collaboration has helped the organization improve its programs and establish goals for future conservation work.
The District’s seven current full board members have collectively contributed 136 years of service. Four members recognized during the award ceremony included Walter Garing, with 41 years of service; Paul Kowalczyk, with 20 years; Timothy Jaggars, with 12 years; and Andrew Weist, with 11 years. George Boudman Jr. also attended the event and serves as an Associate Board Member.
District Manager Jamie Knecht, who has served the organization for nearly 22 years, expressed appreciation for the Board’s recognition. She emphasized the importance of its guidance and said its members have played a meaningful role in her professional development.
The Wayne Conservation District thanked the SCC for honoring the Board’s leadership and dedication to the community.
