Farms play an essential role in producing food, fiber, and energy, but agricultural operations also generate solid waste that requires careful management. Materials such as manure, livestock bedding, and unused feed contain valuable nutrients that can benefit crop production when handled properly.
According to Weiyun Hua, Assistant Teaching Professor; Robert Meinen, Pennsylvania Nutrient Management Education Program; and Erin Trouba, Extension Educator, at Penn State Extension, effective storage can help farmers protect resources while making better use of these nutrients.
Farm operators should evaluate whether their current waste-management systems are creating problems. Common concerns include not having a stabilized area for storing manure or used bedding, having existing storage structures reach or exceed their capacity, and allowing waste materials or runoff to enter surface water or groundwater.
A properly designed solid waste storage facility can provide a stable location for temporarily or long-term storing agricultural waste until it is ready to be applied to fields or otherwise reused.
These facilities can improve overall waste handling, allow nutrients to be applied when crops can use them most effectively, reduce potential environmental impacts, and minimize the amount of waste-management work required during winter.
Solid waste storage is often one component of a broader conservation system. Other practices may include liquid waste storage structures, heavy-use area protection, manure separators, roofs, and roof runoff management systems. Combining these practices can provide more comprehensive protection for farm resources and surrounding waterways.
Farmers have several options when designing a solid waste storage facility. Important considerations include the structure’s size, capacity, coverage, safety features, the type of material being stored, and the equipment used to move waste from the production area to storage. Producers can seek professional assistance with facility design, permitting, and construction to ensure the system meets applicable requirements.
Safety should also be a priority. Stored solid waste must be stacked securely and kept below the height of surrounding walls to reduce collapse risks.
Moisture levels should be monitored because extremely dry materials can ignite easily, while excessive and uneven moisture may contribute to microbial activity, heat buildup, and spontaneous combustion. Workers and farm residents should understand these hazards and follow an established safety plan.
Regular maintenance is equally important. Storage areas should be emptied according to an appropriate schedule and routinely inspected for concrete cracks, structural damage, or problems with roofs and supports. Any safety or structural concerns should be addressed promptly.
