PA receives $200M for water infrastructure upgrade

PA receives $200M for water infrastructure upgrade

By Blake Jackson

Over $200 million from President Biden's infrastructure plan is flowing to Pennsylvania, specifically targeting critical drinking water and clean water projects. This funding, part of a larger $50 billion national investment, aims to address aging infrastructure and emerging water challenges.

"This historic funding will help communities ensure safe drinking water and rebuild vital clean water infrastructure," said EPA Administrator Michael Regan. Nearly half will be available as grants or low-interest loans, prioritizing underserved areas.

Governor Josh Shapiro welcomed the investment, highlighting its role in building a better future for Pennsylvanians. He emphasized the importance of clean water access, aligning with the state's constitutional right to a healthy environment.

Congressional representatives also applauded the initiative. Rep. Summer Lee highlighted the fight for environmental justice, emphasizing the need for clean water in underserved communities. Rep. Chris Deluzio specifically mentioned lead pipe removal efforts in Western Pennsylvania.

Nationally, communities face water infrastructure challenges like aging pipes, inadequate stormwater management, and emerging contaminants like PFAS. This funding addresses these issues through the Clean Water and Drinking Water State Revolving Funds (SRF).

Pennsylvania's allocation includes Bipartisan Infrastructure Law General Supplemental funds and Emerging Contaminant funds for SRF programs. Additional resources for lead service line replacement are expected later this year.

Since 2022, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has already injected nearly $800 million into Pennsylvania's water infrastructure. These investments are creating jobs, protecting public health, and preserving water resources.

This initiative demonstrates the ongoing commitment to improving water infrastructure across the country. With continued investment, communities can ensure safe drinking water and a healthy environment for all.
