PA grants boost organic farming workforce

PA grants boost organic farming workforce

By Blake Jackson

The Pennsylvania government is offering grants to organizations creating apprenticeship programs in organic farming. This initiative aims to address the growing demand for skilled workers in the organic agriculture sector, which is a thriving industry in the state.

The program, named PAsmart, offers grants up to $350,000 with a total funding of $700,000. These "earn-while-you-learn" opportunities aim to make organic farming careers more accessible by providing on-the-job training and financial support.

This investment aligns with Governor Shapiro's commitment to creating good-paying jobs and supporting sustainable economic development. The initiative builds upon previous investments in career training and the newly established Center for Organic Excellence.

Organic farming is a significant contributor to Pennsylvania's economy, ranking third nationally in organic commodity sales. Addressing workforce challenges is crucial for the industry's continued success.

The program is expected to benefit both individuals and the organic agriculture sector. By providing training and career opportunities, it can empower Pennsylvanians to enter a promising and sustainable field. Additionally, it can help meet the industry's need for skilled workers, ensuring its growth and contribution to the state's economy.

With this initiative, Pennsylvania demonstrates its dedication to fostering a robust and sustainable agricultural sector, while also creating meaningful employment opportunities for its residents.
