PA budget invests in agriculture for future growth

PA budget invests in agriculture for future growth

By Blake Jackson

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's proposed budget for 2024-25 highlights agriculture as a vital sector for the state's economic growth and future. He emphasizes the need to build on the industry's existing strengths and foster innovation through various initiatives.

Shapiro's vision aligns with William Penn's words, viewing Pennsylvania as a seed for national progress. The proposed budget reflects this vision by investing in:

  • Agriculture Innovation Program: This $10.3 million program overseen by the State Conservation Commission will provide resources for farmers, service providers, and businesses to explore new technologies that enhance efficiency and environmental sustainability.
  • Funding for a veterinary laboratory in western Pennsylvania: This initiative aims to improve animal health services and disease control.
  • Continued support for existing programs: The budget continues funding for programs like the Ag Conservation Assistance Program, Dairy Margin Coverage, and the PA Farm Bill, demonstrating commitment to supporting farmers and various agricultural sectors.

Beyond direct agricultural investments, the budget also includes initiatives that indirectly benefit the industry:

  • PA SITES funding: This $500 million allocation will create more shovel-ready commercial and industrial sites, attracting potential processors and businesses that can expand market channels for Pennsylvania farmers.
  • Main Street Matters program: This new $25 million program aims to revitalize small businesses and commercial corridors in rural communities, potentially attracting new residents and improving quality of life.
  • Department of Labor and Industry investments: Increased funding for skills-based hiring practices and apprenticeship programs is intended to bolster job creation, workforce training, and business growth, benefiting the entire agricultural ecosystem.
  • Department of Environmental Protection funding: Additional resources will improve permitting processes and decrease processing times for farmers, allowing them to focus on production.

Governor Shapiro's budget proposal recognizes the crucial role agriculture plays in Pennsylvania's past, present, and future. By investing in innovation, infrastructure development, and workforce training, the budget aims to support sustainable growth and prosperity for industry and the state.
