PA $10.3M plan - future of farming and clean energy

PA $10.3M plan - future of farming and clean energy

By Blake Jackson

Governor Shapiro and Agriculture Secretary Redding visited Dickinson College Farm to showcase the state's commitment to innovation in agriculture.

The Governor's proposed budget allocates $10.3 million to support this initiative, aiming to bolster Pennsylvania's $132 billion agricultural industry.

This investment aligns with the Governor's Economic Development Strategy, prioritizing agriculture and clean energy. His budget and energy plan propose measures like the Agriculture Innovation Grant Program and the Pennsylvania Reliable Energy Sustainability Standard (PRESS) to support these goals. These efforts aim to create new jobs, reduce utility costs, and address climate change.

"Innovation is key to Pennsylvania agriculture," said Secretary Redding. "The Governor's proposal strengthens our agricultural businesses and promotes conservation practices."

Dickinson College Farm exemplifies such innovation. Their 80-acre student-led farm features a pioneering anaerobic digester project. This system converts farm waste into clean energy, reducing water pollution and generating electricity for the farm.

The project was funded through the Pennsylvania Farm Bill and the Cumberland County Conservation District. Governor Shapiro's energy plan aims for Pennsylvania to generate 50% of its energy from clean sources by 2025, with projects like this serving as a model.

"Sustainability is a core value at Dickinson," said College President John Jones. "The bio digester demonstrates solutions for waste management, renewable energy generation, and waterway protection."

The project also serves as a learning lab for students, offering hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture and renewable energy.

Governor Shapiro's proposal, House Bill 2310, has received bipartisan support. Representative Thomas Kutz emphasizes the importance of supporting the agricultural community and fostering innovation for future generations.

This initiative positions Pennsylvania as a leader in sustainable agriculture and clean energy, creating a brighter future for industry and the environment.
