PA egg production up 4% in May

PA egg production up 4% in May

By Blake Jackson

Pennsylvania's egg industry maintained its positive momentum in May 2024, according to the latest report by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. The state saw a 4% increase in egg production compared to May 2023, reaching a total of 699.1 million eggs.

This growth is driven by a slight increase in the number of laying hens (layers) in the state. The average number of layers in Pennsylvania during May 2024 was 27.2 million, up 2% from the previous year.

Efficiency remains a key factor in Pennsylvania's egg production. May 2024 saw an average of 2,570 eggs laid per 100 hens, a 2% increase compared to May 2023. This indicates that Pennsylvania hens are maintaining a consistent and productive laying rate.

In May 2024, Pennsylvania produced 647.4 million eggs, the primary type consumed by people, and 51.7 million hatching eggs, used for breeding purposes.

Pennsylvania's positive performance contrasts slightly with the national trend. Overall US egg production dipped slightly (2%) in May 2024 compared to the previous year. This highlights the strength of Pennsylvania's egg industry and its ability to maintain growth even in a somewhat stagnant national market.

Looking ahead, continued monitoring of egg production data will be crucial to understand the long-term trajectory of Pennsylvania's egg industry. However, based on the May 2024 report, the outlook appears positive, with both production and laying efficiency on the rise.
