Orchards in Pennsylvania are facing challenges from the hot, dry weather this year. The lack of rain has caused fruit to ripen more quickly, and some farmers are delaying planting next year's crops.
At Orchard Valley Farm in Springfield Township, the apples are ripening so quickly that they are being harvested by the box. The lack of rain has also made the fruit a little smaller this year.
Flinchbaugh's Orchard and Farm Market in Hellam Township is also feeling the effects of the hot weather. The orchard's irrigation system is helping to keep the apples at full size, but it is an added cost. The warm nights are also keeping some apples from turning red, so farmers are planting redder strains.
Despite the challenges, farmers are working hard to get their crops harvested. They are taking advantage of the cooler parts of the day and using sunscreen and hats to protect themselves from the sun.
"We have just got to grin and bear it," said Tim Strathmeyer, Orchard Valley's production manager.
The hot, dry weather is expected to continue, so farmers are preparing for more challenges in the coming months. They are hoping for some rain to help their crops, but they are also working to adapt to the changing climate.
