Pennsylvania is on the hunt for a suitable location to establish its fourth animal diagnostic laboratory. This new facility, to be housed at a university or public institution west of Interstate 99, aims to enhance animal disease testing and research capabilities in the state.
With a budget of $6 million, the selected institution will be responsible for setting up the lab, hiring staff, acquiring necessary equipment, and ensuring efficient operations.
The lab is expected to play a crucial role in diagnosing diseases such as avian influenza, mycoplasma, and equine herpes virus, among others.
Currently, Pennsylvania operates three animal diagnostic labs east of Interstate 99. The increasing demand for testing services, particularly from farmers in the western part of the state, has necessitated the establishment of a new facility to improve accessibility and reduce testing turnaround times.
The state is looking for applicants that can meet stringent criteria, including the ability to obtain lab accreditation, sufficient space and resources, and convenient location for farmers, veterinarians, and researchers.
A committee will evaluate applications and recommend a suitable host to the Agriculture Secretary.
The deadline for applications is October 4, 2023, with the final decision expected by December 4, 2023.
