Halt lameness in dairy herds - protect profits and cows

Halt lameness in dairy herds - protect profits and cows

By Blake Jackson

Lameness, a costly nightmare for dairy farmers, lurks among the top three threats to your herd's well-being. This painful condition not only impacts animal welfare but also wreaks havoc on milk production, slashing output by an estimated 5.5 pounds per day per affected cow.

Foot trouble is the main culprit, with both non-infectious (sole ulcers, white-line disease) and infectious (digital dermatitis, interdigital phlegmon) culprits lurking in dirty housing, poor biosecurity practices, and high-stress periods like calving and first lactation.

Digital dermatitis, the most common offender, often reveals its presence through unsightly "hairy heel warts." Regular foot baths with copper sulfate solution can control this pesky invader, but remember:

  • Accuracy is key: Early detection is crucial for effective treatment. Use visual observation tools or activity monitors to identify limping cows, especially in challenging tie-stall setups where subtle cues like weight shifting can offer valuable clues.
  • Foot bath finesse: Studies recommend four consecutive milkings per week with a 5% copper sulfate solution for optimal control. While costlier, it packs a more potent punch than weaker concentrations.
  • Twice-yearly hoof trims: Regular maintenance keeps hooves healthy and minimizes lameness risks.
  • Cleanliness counts: Scrape barns diligently to keep bacteria at bay. This simple practice safeguards your precious herd and saves you money in the long run.

By prioritizing these preventive measures, you can keep lameness at bay, ensure your cows' comfort and well-being, and enjoy the sweet reward of peak milk production and a thriving dairy operation.
