Governor Josh Shapiro embarked on a visit to Lehigh Gorge State Park in Luzerne County to inaugurate a new park access point and highlight the proposed investments in state parks, forests, and trails outlined in his budget. Designed to address the most critical issues facing Pennsylvanians, the budget proposal aims to create safer and healthier communities, stimulate economic growth, safeguard the environment, and support local businesses.
Pennsylvania's 124 state parks, attracting approximately 40 million visitors annually, contribute significantly to the state's economy. Outdoor recreation generates $14 billion each year and sustains 150,000 jobs. To capitalize on these natural assets, Governor Shapiro's budget allocates $112 million to improve parks and forests statewide. Furthermore, the establishment of the Office of Outdoor Recreation aims to facilitate connections between natural resources, parks, and local businesses, positioning Pennsylvania as a leader in outdoor recreation.
During the visit to Lehigh Gorge State Park, Governor Shapiro met with outdoor outfitters and partners involved in the completion of the D&L Trail, which traverses the park along the Lehigh River in Luzerne and Carbon counties. The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) has made concerted efforts to enhance park infrastructure, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for visitors. Secretary Cindy Dunn expressed the significance of Governor Shapiro's recognition of Pennsylvania's natural assets and commitment to serving the public.
The Lehigh River serves as a prominent outdoor recreation destination, drawing hundreds of thousands of tourists annually. With the support of the newly established Office of Outdoor Recreation, Director Hollis, Secretary Dunn, and Governor Shapiro, Pennsylvania aims to preserve and enhance its outdoor resources for personal enjoyment, as well as to bolster the tourism and outdoor recreation industry that drives the regional economy.
Governor Shapiro's budget proposes $2.8 million to support the management and safety of public lands and create the Office of Outdoor Recreation. The recently completed $7.4 million project at the White Haven Access Area within Lehigh Gorge State Park enhances opportunities for whitewater boating, hiking, and biking.
The governor's budget initiatives seek to provide more avenues for people to embrace the outdoors while forging connections between natural resources and local businesses. With these investments, Pennsylvania envisions a future where a new generation of Pennsylvanians and visitors from around the world can relish the state's parks, trails, and forests.
