Penn State Extension has introduced a new publication, Bees of Pennsylvania: A Guide to the Genera, aimed at helping readers identify and learn about the state’s diverse bee populations. Pennsylvania is home to more than 440 bee species, and this guide provides accessible information for anyone interested in exploring this biodiversity.
“Bees are critical for plant reproduction around the globe because of their role in pollination,” said Margarita López-Uribe, the Lorenzo L. Langstroth Early Career Professor of Entomology in the College of Agricultural Sciences.
“Pennsylvania is not an exception. Bees here play a role, both in the pollination of plants in natural habitats and in agriculture, so it is important to know and recognize what bees are around us.”
The guide introduces readers to the various bee genera found across the state. It includes concise descriptions of biological and morphological traits, making it possible for nonexperts to identify bees in the field at the genus level.
A central feature of the publication is a table listing all bee genera present in Pennsylvania. It highlights key traits such as nesting behavior, sociality, parasitic tendencies, level of specialization, and overall abundance. Photos of each genus are also provided for easier identification.
This resource was developed with contributions from Penn State Extension entomology experts, members of the López-Uribe lab, specialists from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, bee identification experts, and Extension Master Gardeners.
The Bees of Pennsylvania: A Guide to the Genera is available at no cost, both in print and as a digital download.
