Field training days for manure storage specialists

Field training days for manure storage specialists

By Blake Jackson

From August 19 to 21, 2024, Lewisburg, PA will host the ACA and Manure Storage Workshop, a crucial training event for commercial and public nutrient management specialists seeking provisional certification.

This mandatory course is designed to equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to address the manure management component of an Act 38 nutrient management plan.

The workshop is structured into three key segments. All participants must attend the Day 1 virtual training session, which will cover essential regulations and technical guidance on manure storages and Animal Concentration Areas (ACAs).

This virtual session will take place on September 19 from 10:00 AM to 2:30 PM, with a lunch break scheduled from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. The session will be conducted via Zoom, and the link to join is here.

Following the virtual training, attendees will be assigned to either Day 2 or Day 3 for field training, where they will visit farms to practically apply the concepts learned.

Each participant will only attend one of these field training days, either September 20 or 21. On the chosen day, attendees will meet at the assigned location at 8:45 AM and will carpool to various farm sites. The field sessions are expected to conclude around 3:30 PM.

This training is designed to help specialists:

  • Understand the regulations and technical guidance related to manure storages and ACAs.
  • Identify and evaluate manure storages and ACAs on-site.
  • Assess the adequacy of manure management practices to prevent water pollution.
  • Recognize Best Management Practices (BMPs) necessary for inclusion in an Act 38 nutrient management plan.

Registration is required for all participants, and walk-ins will not be accommodated. The deadline for registration is one week prior to the training date.
