Stephanie Painter and her sister grew up on their family's dairy farm in northern Pennsylvania. They watched as neighboring farmers struggled and realized:
"If we want to control our own destiny, we have to take matters into our own hands," said Painter.
After years of research, the sisters partnered with Reykjavik Creamery, a Cumberland County-based milk processor.
"We knew there was no choice," Painter said. "If we want the best dairy product, the best way to use our milk, we have to get it made at Reykjavik Creamery."
Milk from the family farm is now trucked to the creamery and turned into Painterland Sisters Icelandic Yogurt.
Reykjavik uses a specialized process to create the high protein, lactose-free product.
The sisters then partnered with Market Wagon, an online farmers market, to get their product to consumers.
According to Painter, "The more that we optimize that and utilize that, the better we're going to keep up with what people want today."
