Over 140 eager 4-H members from 13 Pennsylvania counties converged on the Pennsylvania Farm Show for the 2024 Potato Grading and Identification Contest. These spud-savvy youngsters put their knowledge and skills to the test in a multi-station competition designed to enhance their decision-making, observation, and quick thinking.
The contest comprised two divisions: Basic and Honors. Basic division contestants faced three stations testing their speed and accuracy in potato grading, defect identification, and plate evaluation. Honors division challengers took on these stations and three additional ones, including weight estimation and premium pack selection.
From Bradford County, team "Ariana Cook, Rachel Fritsch, Nadia Alderfer, and Elayna Bellows" emerged victorious in the "A" division, proving their potato prowess. Northampton County teams dominated the "B" division, with "Adam Geiger, Davin Boyle, Mackenzie Ford, and Eli Geiger" taking first place.
Individual accolades also went to Northampton County's Lireal Coonie for first place, followed by Adam Geiger (Northampton) and Juliette Giles (Northampton) in second and third, respectively. The Honors division saw Lehigh County sweep the podium, with Sadie Berger, Payge Haydt, and John Emanuel claiming the top three spots.
But the competition wasn't just about winning. The event aimed to equip young participants with valuable life skills applicable beyond the potato patch. Judging livestock and other agricultural items requires similar skills, preparing these 4-H members for diverse future endeavors.
This year's event also welcomed Cloverbud members (ages 5-7) and large delegations in a non-competitive "C" division, fostering inclusivity and encouraging further participation.
The call to action is clear: all Pennsylvania counties are encouraged to form potato judging teams for the 2025 contest. Resources and training materials are readily available, empowering horticulture educators, Master Gardeners, and local experts to guide the next generation of potato pros.
