Shapiro Highlights York City Urban Farm as Model for Others

Governor Josh Shapiro visited York City's only urban farm, York Fresh Food Farms, during Pennsylvania's Urban Agriculture Week to witness the impact it has on providing fresh produce to those facing food insecurity. The farm, established in 2016, has been distributing between 14 and 16 tons of produce annually to areas with limited access to healthy food.

The visit shed light on the issue of hunger in a state renowned for its robust agriculture industry. Despite Pennsylvania's reputation for quality produce, thousands of residents struggle to access nutritious food. Shapiro expressed his concern that hunger continues to be a challenge for a significant portion of the population.

During the event, state Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding praised the efforts of York Fresh Food Farms, commending their dedication and expertise in improving food access in underserved communities.

The success of York Fresh Food Farms serves as an inspiring example for other urban areas in Pennsylvania to address food insecurity and create sustainable solutions through urban agriculture initiatives.
