Proper Calf Nutrition Supports Growth and Rumen Health

Proper Calf Nutrition Supports Growth and Rumen Health

By Blake Jackson

Providing dry feed to young calves is essential for rumen development and long-term performance. Penn State Extension educators Angela Breneman and Cassie Yost recently participated in a research project evaluating calf starter and weaned-calf rations on 40 dairy farms in central and south-central Pennsylvania.

The study found significant differences in nutrient levels and feed types, highlighting the importance of understanding exactly what calves are consuming.

Properly balanced rations are critical for supporting calf health, growth, and future productivity. Inadequate nutrition can lead to poor growth, increased illness, and higher mortality rates.

Researchers found considerable variation in protein levels among starter feeds. Too little protein can limit skeletal growth and development, while excessive protein increases feed costs and results in excess nitrogen being excreted, creating nutrient management concerns.

Starch is another key nutrient in calf starters because it supports rumen development and provides energy for growth. Fermentable carbohydrates encourage microbial activity and stimulate rumen development.

However, feeding highly digestible starch sources without sufficient fiber can negatively affect rumen health.

The study also found substantial differences in the physical form of calf starters. Some producers use home-mixed feeds, which may reduce costs but often have unknown nutritional value.

Research comparing textured and pelleted starters found no differences in growth performance, although calves fed textured starters experienced fewer health issues, including reduced cases of scours and improved respiratory health.

Molasses is commonly included in starter feeds to improve palatability, reduce dust, and encourage early feed intake. While beneficial in moderate amounts, excessive molasses can reduce intake and increase digestive problems.

Researchers emphasized that selecting the right calf starter depends on a farm's overall calf-feeding strategy, including milk-feeding programs and growth goals. By choosing feeds that meet calves' nutritional requirements and support rumen development, dairy producers can improve calf health, performance, and future herd productivity.

FAQs

  • Why is calf starter feed important?

It promotes rumen development and supports healthy growth in young calves.

  • What happens if starter feed lacks enough protein?

Calves may experience reduced growth, poor development, and lower performance.

  • Why is starch important in calf starters?

Starch provides energy and helps stimulate rumen microbial activity and development.

  • Are textured starters better than pelleted starters?

Research found similar growth performance, but textured starters showed some health benefits.

  • Can farmers mix their own calf starter feed?

Yes, but homemade mixes may have inconsistent nutrient levels if not properly formulated.
