Preserving the Past, Cultivating the Future

Preserving the Past, Cultivating the Future

In a heartwarming celebration on July 18th, Hanover Shoe Farms Inc. rejoiced over the successful preservation of over 1,700 acres of precious farmland in Adams County, Pennsylvania. The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) of the USDA, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, the Land Conservancy of Adams County, and the Adams County Office of Planning and Development worked together to achieve historic success.

Together, they worked tirelessly since 2019 to protect 11 parcels of Hanover Shoe Farms' land with permanent easements, ensuring its safeguarding against development for generations to come.

The preservation project was made financially feasible by leveraging funds from USDA's Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) and Agricultural Conservation Easement Program (ACEP). These programs have proven to be invaluable tools in preserving not only the Hanover Shoe Farms' lands but also contributing to broader land conservation efforts.

The celebration was graced by influential figures, including Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Secretary, Russell Redding, who emphasized that this decision was more than just a generational commitment; it was a forever decision. The support and participation of the Pennsylvania citizens showcased the profound value of the land not only to farmers but to the entire community.

Randy Phiel, Adams County Commissioner Chair, acknowledged the challenges faced during the initial stages of the project when preservation seemed like a distant dream. However, the united efforts of the community, including the conservancy committee, overcame hurdles and made the dream a reality.

Denise Coleman, State Conservationist for NRCS, highlighted the vital role of the ACEP and RCPP programs in the successful preservation process. These programs allowed for the continuation of grazing and haying practices while ensuring grassland protection and conservation efforts.

The driving force behind this monumental endeavor was the President and CEO of Hanover Shoe Farms, Russell Williams. While lauded as "the man of the hour," Williams humbly credited the achievement to every individual present, emphasizing that such a forever decision could only be made when it serves a cause greater than oneself.

The event was a testament to the power of community, a heartfelt love letter to land preservation, and a tribute to the partnerships that create a legacy. The future looks promising, with plans for expanding the land to accommodate the thriving equine industry and preserve the beauty of the acres for generations to come.

Hanover Shoe Farms' preservation journey is an inspiring example of how collaboration, commitment, and community spirit can come together to secure a brighter and greener future for all.
